Strachan hails Coventry's return to Premier League after 25 years of community suffering
Former Coventry City manager Gordon Strachan has praised the transformative effect of the club's Championship title win, with the Sky Blues set to return to the Premier League for the first time since their relegation in 2001.
Gordon Strachan, the manager who oversaw Coventry City’s relegation from the Premier League in 2001, says the club’s return to the top flight after 25 years has already transformed the mood across the city.
Strachan was in charge when the Sky Blues’ 34-year stay in the top flight ended, and he has watched on as the club endured two decades of instability — sliding as far as League Two, being twice exiled from their home city due to stadium disputes, and cycling through ownership crises that overshadowed any footballing ambition.
“The community, football-wise, took a battering for 25 years,” Strachan told FourFourTwo. “It’s a different world now in Coventry. The eyes of the world are now on Coventry, which is great, and they’re actually talking about football.”
He reflected on just how consuming the off-field chaos had become for supporters: “For 20 years, it was ‘Who owns the stadium? Who’s got the shares in it? Where are we playing? Are we at Northampton or Birmingham? Who’s the owner?’”
Coventry fans had little to celebrate for the best part of two decades. The club failed to mount a serious promotion challenge for 11 years after their relegation before eventually dropping into the fourth tier. Supporters protested repeatedly as the club drifted further from its former standing as one of English football’s established top-flight presences.
That long wait ended last season when Coventry won the Championship title to secure their place back among the elite. Strachan says the shift in atmosphere has been immediate and visible — road signs around the city now carry the message “We’re back”.
The Sky Blues open their Premier League campaign with an away fixture against champions Arsenal on Friday, 21 August, before the Coventry Building Society Arena hosts its first-ever Premier League match when fellow newly-promoted side Hull City visit on Saturday, 29 August.
