Nine Manchester United players set to exit before the September transfer deadline
Manchester United are preparing a wave of departures before the September 1 deadline, with academy prospects Toby Collyer and Dan Gore among those expected to leave permanently or on loan.
Manchester United are set to offload up to nine players before the summer transfer window closes on September 1, with a mix of permanent sales and loan moves planned for both fringe first-team players and academy graduates.
Toby Collyer is one of the most prominent names on the list. The 22-year-old midfielder has attracted loan and permanent interest from Championship clubs while United finalise their midfield plans. Collyer has a year remaining on his contract, with an option for a further 12 months, and the club are open to selling him outright. His long-term ambition remains to play for United, but he is willing to move on to secure regular first-team football.
Dan Gore is in a comparable position. After making 44 appearances on loan at Rotherham last season, Gore has outgrown academy football and is expected to leave before the deadline. The club quietly handed him a new contract — running until 2028 — before his Rotherham stint, though the deal was never publicly announced.
StrikerChido Obi is set to head out on loan, with United keen to place him at a European club. Obi made seven senior appearances in 2024/25, but manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged the youngster was introduced to first-team football prematurely due to injury shortages. He featured in just two Premier League matchday squads last term.
Jacob Devaney, whose stock rose sharply after a productive loan spell with St Mirren — where he started all but two matches in the Scottish Premiership — is being lined up for another temporary move, with Championship clubs and European sides among those interested.
Jack Moorhouse and Ethan Wheatley are also expected to depart on loan, while permanent offers are being considered for Habeeb Ogunneye, Louis Jackson, and Gabriele Biancheri. Loans will be arranged for the three if no buyers emerge.
United have made a point of protecting their long-term interests in academy sales this summer. The club inserted a high-percentage sell-on clause and a buyback option into the sale of Tyler Fredricson, and applied similar terms to Radek Vitek’s move to Middlesbrough. Ethan Williams, who joined Peterborough last week, left with a 50 per cent sell-on clause, a buyback option, and matching rights clauses attached to his deal.
