City sell Rodri to Barcelona and must move fast to plug a growing midfield void
Manchester City have agreed to sell Rodri to Barcelona after two rejected bids, leaving Enzo Maresca short in midfield following a 3-0 pre-season loss to Arsenal. Deals for Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernandez are being pursued but neither is close to done.
Manchester City have agreed to sell Rodri to Barcelona, ending the World Cup winner’s seven-year stay at the Etihad and deepening a midfield crisis that was laid bare by a 3-0 pre-season defeat to Arsenal.
Barcelona had twice seen bids fall well short before an agreement was reached last week. City’s position on departing players has long been consistent: when the money is right and a player has decided to leave, the club does not stand in the way. Rodri’s absence from the Community Shield in Cardiff, having barely featured in pre-season after returning late from his summer break, had already signalled the direction of travel.
The timing, however, is uncomfortable. Mateo Kovacic was overrun as a lone holding midfielder in Sunday’s friendly loss to Arsenal, and while too much should not be read into a single pre-season result, City do not currently look equipped to match their title rivals or control their opening Premier League fixtures.
The most advanced incoming deal is for Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, a move that has been in the works for so long that much of the initial excitement has faded. Bouaddi is expected to arrive, but a promising youngster cannot realistically be framed as a like-for-like replacement for the best midfielder in the world.
A move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez would carry far greater weight as a statement of intent. Putting a serious bid on the table — one that pressures a direct rival into selling — would signal that City are prepared to act decisively. Whether that deal can be completed before the window closes remains uncertain, with Chelsea having set an informal deadline.
The situation draws comparisons to the summer of 2019, when City responded to a 5-2 home defeat by Leicester by moving quickly to sign Ruben Dias. The club are at a similar inflection point: they need to act, and act soon. With only two competitive games remaining before the transfer window shuts, the margin for delay is narrow.
Elliot Anderson’s arrival was considered smart business, but it has not been followed by the volume of recruitment the squad’s needs demand. City look underprepared for the season ahead, and confirming Bouaddi alone will not change that picture.
