Amorim says he 'feels nothing' for Man Utd after Milan's 4-2 pre-season win over his former club
Ruben Amorim insists his emotional ties to Manchester United have dissolved since joining AC Milan, whose 4-2 pre-season victory over the Red Devils in Poland gave the Portuguese coach his first win of the summer.
Ruben Amorim says he feels no lingering attachment to Manchester United after his AC Milan side defeated the Premier League club 4-2 in a pre-season fixture in Poland, giving the Portuguese coach his first win since taking charge at the San Siro this summer.
Amorim was dismissed by United in early 2025 following a tenure in which he won just 24 of 63 matches, presided over the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish — 15th place — and lost in the Europa League final. Milan moved quickly to appoint him, and the pre-season schedule threw up an early reunion with his former employers.
“For me, it was just a normal match,” Amorim told Sky Sport Italia. “Since I signed with Milan, I’ve felt nothing about Manchester United. I’m just proud to have been at Man United and I still love the club, but after signing with Milan, I feel nothing bad about anything because I’m very happy, because I’m in the place where I want to be.”
The result was a timely boost for Amorim, whose Milan side had struggled in pre-season prior to the United clash, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. The win over the Red Devils offered a more encouraging platform ahead of the new Serie A campaign.
“I wanted to win a game this pre-season to present ourselves well in our league, to give a good image to our fans, so they can support us in our first match,” he added.
At his Milan unveiling, Amorim had already offered a public apology to United supporters for the manner of his departure. “I didn’t have the opportunity — and I am sorry for that — to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment,” he said. “I am really proud to have been their coach for a year. I did some mistakes and I learn a lot.”
The 4-2 scoreline will do little to ease the scrutiny on United heading into the new Premier League season, while Amorim will hope the result signals a more settled start to life at one of European football’s most storied clubs.
