Tottenham sink to 18th place after another home defeat to Aston Villa

Tottenham suffered their fourth defeat in five Premier League matches, losing 3-2 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday, leaving the London club in 18th place in the standings.

The Villans quickly took control of the match thanks to goals from Mazambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano Buendia. Tottenham did narrow the gap through Gallagher and Van Hecke, but both goals came too late to turn the tide. The final score of 3-2 illustrates the Spurs’ helplessness, having failed to score a single league goal in their first four matches.

Roberto De Zerbi’s situation is all the more concerning given that the club invested over €350 million in the summer transfer window. Seven months after leaving Olympique de Marseille, the Italian manager, who had impressed at Brighton between 2022 and 2024, is struggling to find the formula in the Premier League. The season’s only victory across all competitions remains the one against Charlton, in the English second division, in the first round of the League Cup. The Spurs were then eliminated by Liverpool in that same competition.

With a potential one-point deficit depending on positive results from Fulham and Coventry this weekend, Tottenham could fall further down the standings. The pressure on De Zerbi, appointed this summer to revive a club with European ambitions, intensifies as matches accumulate without a league victory.
