Gerrard warns 15-year-old Gabriel that leaving Man Utd for Real Madrid solves nothing

Steven Gerrard has issued a pointed warning to Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel, insisting the 15-year-old faces the same obstacles at any club he might join and that the situation “stinks” of agents and outside influences forcing a premature move.

Gabriel informed United he wants his registration cancelled at Old Trafford, with Real Madrid and Barcelona reported to be circling the youngster. The news broke shortly before what had been expected to be his United debut, and he has not featured for any of the club’s sides since. United manager Michael Carrick called for restraint, saying: “It’s more about the welfare, the care and the attention of JJ as a child really. He’s certainly a young man. The situation is what it is, but we have to be careful about the exposure on that one.”

Gerrard echoed those concerns, arguing that the broader trend of rushing young talent is one of the most troubling issues in the modern game. “It’s not just in this situation. Broadly, it scares me in the game that kids can now be rushed or careers can be forced,” he said.

The former Liverpool captain questioned what Gabriel would actually gain by departing one of the world’s biggest clubs. “He’s at one of the biggest clubs in the world. They’ve got a history and a tradition of producing fantastic players,” Gerrard said. “There will be top people behind the scenes at Manchester United, but the big thing for me is, you’ve got an English coach and an English assistant manager who will want to, when the time is right and when they think he’s ready, protect him — but when they feel he’s ready, they will play him.”

Gerrard also challenged the assumption that a move to Real Madrid would accelerate Gabriel’s development, pointing to the demands of elite management. “Even if he goes to Real Madrid now, is José Mourinho going to play this kid straight away? You know what these elite managers are like — they play kids when they are ready to contribute to the team.”

He also warned that the noise surrounding the situation could itself become a liability in the eyes of potential suitors. “If you’re another club looking into this situation, you’re thinking to yourself, ‘yeah, the kid is a big talent’, but do you want the baggage and the noise around it?”

Gerrard stopped short of apportioning direct blame, acknowledging he does not know the full details, but was unambiguous in his overall assessment. “I don’t know what’s been said or promised behind the scenes, but from the outside this stinks to me,” he said, adding that parents, agents, and other outside influences too often force and rush young players in ways that can permanently damage their careers.
