Rice escapes red card for kick-out as Arsenal collapse to 3-0 defeat against Brighton

Declan Rice avoided a red card despite appearing to kick out at Brighton midfielder Malick Yalcouye in the closing seconds of Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, a result that leaves Mikel Arteta’s side with nearly a month to reflect on one of their worst performances of the season.

Referee Darren England showed Rice a yellow card in the seventh minute of second-half added time for unsportsmanlike conduct — the same offence that accounted for four of the five bookings in the match. Footage of the incident appears to show Rice deliberately kicking Yalcouye off the ball after the pair had been involved in a minor tussle, with the Brighton player already moving away when Rice made contact.

The incident immediately drew comparisons to Phil Foden’s red card in the Manchester derby the previous weekend, where the Manchester City forward was dismissed for a similar off-the-ball kick-out. Had Rice received a straight red for violent conduct, he would have faced a three-match ban covering home fixtures against Leeds United and Everton, as well as the trip to Nottingham Forest.

Reaction on social media was swift. “How’s this any different to Foden then?” wrote one user on X. Another argued it was “a textbook red card” for violent conduct, while a third questioned the consistency of Premier League officiating, pointing to Foden’s dismissal as a direct precedent.

The controversy over Rice’s booking was the final flashpoint in a chastening afternoon for Arsenal. Arteta did not shy away from the scale of the performance, saying after the match: “A really disappointing result and performance. Brighton were another gear up from us. We were extremely poor technically and not respecting the game. It’s a big lesson to learn. It doesn’t take away from what the team has done the last few weeks. But now we have to make sure we learn the lesson because this can happen again.”

With Rice now free to play, Arteta at least avoids a selection headache when Arsenal return to action — though the manner of this defeat will give the squad plenty to address in the weeks ahead.
