Wrexham mock Southampton over Spygate again after 2-1 Championship win at Racecourse Ground

Wrexham beat Southampton 2-1 thanks to an 89th-minute own goal from Keven Schlotterbeck, then trolled their rivals on social media over the Spygate scandal — the second such jibe in three days from co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Wrexham defeated Southampton 2-1 at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday, with Keven Schlotterbeck’s 89th-minute own goal settling the Championship clash and handing Phil Parkinson’s side their first win in four games.

The result ended a miserable run of three games without a victory for Wrexham and represented a dramatic reversal of fortunes from five months earlier, when Southampton visited Wales and won 5-1. That earlier defeat later took on added significance when it emerged that Southampton had been covertly gathering intelligence on opponents’ training sessions — a scandal involving Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town and Oxford United that ultimately saw the club expelled from the Championship play-off final.

Wrexham had already taken aim at their rivals on Thursday, when co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney released a video promoting shirt sponsor Firefox that was laced with Spygate references. Reynolds appeared from behind a tree to declare: “Today, for no particular reason, we want to talk about the importance of privacy.” McElhenney followed up: “Specifically, how to prevent spies from seeing what you’re doing.” Reynolds rounded off the clip by saying: “Refreshing, huh? An organisation that actually respects your privacy.”

After Saturday’s victory, the club posted a pointed timeline on X: “April 7 2026: Wrexham AFC 1-5 Southampton. May 7 2026: Southampton get caught spying on Middlesbrough. September 19 2026: Wrexham AFC 2-1 Southampton. Makes you think…” The post was accompanied by a photograph of Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier and accumulated more than 2,600 likes within an hour.

Fans inside the Racecourse Ground had already made their feelings clear during the match, chanting: “You only win when you’re spying.” Reactions online were largely enthusiastic — one user called it “unreal s***housery” — though at least one Wrexham supporter urged restraint: “Guys stop it now, the video was funny but don’t do this.”

For Parkinson, the focus remained firmly on the football. “I think we all needed a lift today with a gritty Wrexham performance,” he said after the final whistle.

The win leaves Wrexham level on points with Southampton — both on 10 — after eight Championship games, heading into the international break.
