Gerrard warns 15-year-old Gabriel that forcing Man Utd exit 'scares' him

Steven Gerrard has spoken out against the forces driving 15-year-old JJ Gabriel’s attempt to leave Manchester United, saying the situation “scares” him and that Old Trafford may still be the best environment for the teenager’s development.

Gabriel made headlines earlier this week after requesting an immediate departure from United, subsequently flying to Barcelona for talks with potential suitors. The move has drawn widespread attention to the growing influence of agents and parents on the careers of elite youth players.

Gerrard, speaking publicly on the matter, was careful to acknowledge the limits of his knowledge of the specific circumstances. “I don’t know the details and the background in this isolated situation with JJ Gabriel,” he said, “but if you look at it, all he’s at is one of the biggest clubs in the world. They’ve got a history and a tradition of producing fantastic players.”

The Liverpool legend’s broader concern centred on a pattern he sees across the game. “It’s not just in this situation. Broadly, it scares me in the game that kids can now be rushed or careers can be forced,” he said. “These talents, they have parents, they have agents, outside influences that force and rush too soon, and it can affect a kid’s career.”

Gerrard also pointed to United’s current coaching setup as a reason for Gabriel to stay patient, citing manager Michael Carrick and assistant Steve Holland as figures who would manage the youngster’s progression carefully. “There will be top people behind the scenes at Manchester United,” he said. “You’ve got an English coach and an English assistant manager who will want to, when the time is right and when they think he’s ready, protect him — but when they feel he’s ready, they will play him.”

He also raised doubts about whether a move away would deliver what Gabriel’s camp appears to be seeking, using José Mourinho at Real Madrid as a hypothetical example. “Even if he goes to Real Madrid now, is José Mourinho going to play this kid straight away? You know what these elite managers are like — they play kids when they are ready to contribute to the team.”

Gerrard concluded with a pointed assessment of the optics surrounding the saga. “From the outside this stinks to me that someone is pushing, forcing and rushing it. And I don’t think it’s going to help the kid in any way, shape or form.”

United have not yet publicly commented on Gabriel’s reported request to leave.
