Tielemans' pre-season admission haunts Man United after 2-0 collapse at Hull
Youri Tielemans told Rio Ferdinand before the season that Manchester United had focused on ball-work rather than fitness in pre-season. That admission looked prophetic as Hull City outran and outmuscled United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on the opening weekend.
Manchester United suffered a chastening 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, with Michael Carrick’s side outrun and outfought by a team widely tipped for relegation.
The result carried an uncomfortable echo of comments made by midfielder Youri Tielemans before a ball had been kicked in anger. Speaking with Rio Ferdinand shortly after completing his move from Aston Villa, Tielemans revealed that United’s pre-season had been light on physical conditioning. “When you come back from the World Cup, you don’t do loads of running,” the Belgian said. “Just chill.” Ferdinand, a former United centre-back, was visibly taken aback by the admission at the time.
The numbers from the Hull defeat did little to ease those concerns. The Tigers won 58.8% of all duels and dominated United in the air, claiming 57.9% of aerial battles. Hull also recorded six interceptions to United’s two — a statistical picture of a side that was simply sharper and more aggressive across the pitch.
Tielemans and Andrey Santos, a £50 million summer signing from Chelsea, were paired in central midfield but both were substituted in the second half as Carrick turned to Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Sesko in search of a way back into the game. Tielemans failed to win a single tackle, while Santos won just one and was dribbled past twice — a worrying return for a midfield pairing expected to set the tempo.
Hull’s goals both arrived from crosses into the box, underlining how comfortably Jakirovic’s side were able to work the flanks and deliver into dangerous areas against a United defence that lacked the protection of a combative midfield screen.
Carrick kept his composure in the post-match interview, acknowledging the performance fell short without catastrophising. “Some of it was OK, there’s bits to improve on,” he said. “It was never going to be perfect, but going behind and giving ourselves a lot to do makes it more difficult. It was a typical one of those games, with a newly-promoted team at home. You can’t give them much, they’ve got a lot to hold on to.”
He added: “After that, we had moments and opportunities but we didn’t have the spark to put the chances away or create any more. We’re bitterly disappointed with the result, but we won’t let it knock us.”
Whether United’s pre-season approach directly caused the defeat is impossible to say with certainty, but the fitness and intensity gap on display at the MKM Stadium will give Carrick and his coaching staff plenty to address before their next fixture.
