Mateta takes Crystal Palace contract dispute to FIFA in bid to become free agent
Jean-Philippe Mateta has escalated his attempt to void the final year of his Crystal Palace contract by taking his case to FIFA, after an independent Premier League tribunal failed to resolve the dispute in his favour.
Jean-Philippe Mateta has involved FIFA in his bid to invalidate the final 10 months of his Crystal Palace contract, in an extraordinary legal dispute that could see the French striker walk away from Selhurst Park as a free agent before his deal expires next June.
Mateta joined Palace on an 18-month loan from Mainz in 2021 before signing a four-and-a-half year permanent contract in January 2022. That deal included an option for an additional 12 months, which Palace activated in 2024, extending his stay through to the end of the current season. Mateta, however, contends that the extra year should be considered void.
According to the BBC, the case was first heard by an independent tribunal under Premier League rules, but Mateta has now pushed the dispute further by bringing it before FIFA. If he succeeds, the 27-year-old would become a free agent immediately, rather than waiting for his contract to run its course.
The timing adds intrigue given Mateta’s recent history at the club. He came close to joining AC Milan in January, only for the move to collapse over concerns about a knee issue. Aston Villa are now reportedly monitoring the striker, who would represent a significant addition for any club chasing a proven Premier League goalscorer.
Mateta’s record at Palace is difficult to dispute. He has scored 67 goals for the south London club and was central to the most decorated period in their history — contributing to their FA Cup triumph in 2025, their Community Shield victory, and their UEFA Europa Conference League title.
Yet the club is navigating a turbulent transition. Eberechi Eze departed for Arsenal last summer, Marc Guehi joined Manchester City in January after making clear he would not sign a new deal, and manager Oliver Glasner left to take charge at Nottingham Forest. His replacement, Pierre Sage — appointed after impressing at Lens — began his tenure with a 2-0 defeat at Everton.
A successful FIFA ruling in Mateta’s favour would represent yet another significant blow to a Palace side attempting to rebuild under new leadership.
