In-game exchanges between Premier League referees and players will be broadcast live for the first time when the 2026-27 season gets under way, marking a significant step forward in officiating transparency.

Domestic rights-holders will be permitted to air one or two clips per match round taken from head-mounted RefCams worn by officials during games. Previously, regulations restricted RefCam footage to being shown only several days after matches had concluded — a rule that had been in place since the trial became a permanent fixture at the start of last season.

The change has been driven by Howard Webb, chief refereeing officer for Pro Ref, who has pushed for greater clarity in officiating since taking the role four years ago. Webb launched the ‘Mic’d Up’ initiative in 2023 to demonstrate how key decisions are reached on the pitch, and the live audio rollout represents the next phase of that project.

One important limitation remains in place under International Football Association Board rules: no live audio can be broadcast in relation to incidents referred to the Video Assistant Referee. The relaxation applies only to on-field exchanges between referees and players.

The new policy could be heard for the first time when the Premier League returns on Friday night, with defending champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal arrive into the new campaign in strong form after beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Coventry, meanwhile, are back in the top flight for the first time in 25 years, with Frank Lampard in the dugout for the Sky Blues.

The opening weekend also features Michael Carrick’s Manchester United travelling to promoted Hull City on Saturday lunchtime, Manchester City hosting Bournemouth on Sunday, Liverpool facing Newcastle at St James’ Park, and Chelsea taking on Fulham in a London derby at Craven Cottage on Monday night.
