Aubameyang scores on official debut with Deportivo, but La Corogne draws 1-1 against Elche
Transferred from Marseille this summer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first goal in a Deportivo shirt in the 21st minute against Elche. The Galician club, promoted to La Liga, could not secure victory (1-1) on their return to Spanish top flight.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made a promising start in his new colours, but Deportivo could do no better than a 1-1 draw against Elche in their first official match back in La Liga.
The 37-year-old Gabonese striker, who arrived from Marseille this summer, opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a well-executed move, making the most of his first official home match to find the back of the net. An instinctive goal that shows the former Barcelona player still has his finishing touch intact despite his age.
Aubameyang had failed to score in his four pre-season appearances with Deportivo. His transfer from Marseille had been motivated, from the Marseille side, by the need to reduce the club’s wage bill. Deportivo, promoted to La Liga, had quickly identified the Gabonese international as an experienced reinforcement for their return to Spanish top flight.
Despite the advantage provided by their star striker, the Galician club failed to hold their lead and conceded the equaliser, settling for a point in their opening match of the season.
