Merson slams Guimaraes as Brighton thrash Arsenal 3-0 to end perfect start

Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season collapsed at the Amex Stadium as Brighton & Hove Albion handed Mikel Arteta’s side a 3-0 defeat, ending any hope of matching a 123-year club record of eight consecutive victories across all competitions. Pascal Gross opened the scoring after 31 minutes, Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, and Chema Andres powered home a header from a corner shortly before the hour to complete a dominant home performance.

The result drew sharp criticism of Bruno Guimaraes, the £75 million summer signing making his first start for the club. The Brazil international lost possession as early as the seventh minute and struggled throughout against Brighton’s relentless pressing. Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson did not hold back in his assessment.

“He was a million miles off it, million miles off it,” Merson said. “I said at half-time that he’d come off but he stayed on another 10 minutes or so. It was really quick for him. They closed him down. I don’t care how good you are, if people get your head down and close you down and make you work, it becomes a leveller. That’s what Brighton have done. They haven’t given anybody time on the ball to get their head up and pass it, and they’ve been absolutely brilliant.”

Arteta was equally blunt after the final whistle. “Extremely disappointed. But first of all, we have to congratulate Brighton — they deserved it. They were the better team, and from our side, there were certain basics in football that we didn’t. Winning the first ball. They put us in a really difficult place. The amount of technical errors. We didn’t respect any principle of play.”

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler was measured in his response, urging his side to stay grounded despite the scale of the victory. “It is very important to stay humble. We have to enjoy this moment but understand why we had success and come back to our roots, which is about being brilliant in the basics and trusting each other.”

The defeat is a significant early-season setback for Arsenal, who had looked in commanding form before travelling to the south coast. For Guimaraes, the challenge now is to find his footing in a Premier League environment that Brighton demonstrated can humble even the most expensive arrivals.
