Mathys Tel injured after Bogle's unchecked foul; VAR stays silent
Starting for Tottenham against Leeds on Saturday, Mathys Tel was forced off the pitch after Jayden Bogle crushed his ankle. The VAR chose not to intervene, leaving the foul unpunished.
Mathys Tel was forced to leave the field during Tottenham’s match against Leeds on Saturday after a foul by Jayden Bogle that crushed his left ankle and stepped on his tendon. The VAR, after several minutes of analysis, decided not to alert the main referee — who had not whistled anything in real time — apparently deeming the Leeds defender’s gesture involuntary. Bogle escaped without any card.
Tel initially attempted to continue the match before giving way to Dominic Solanke. A setback all the more cruel as the French striker had been delivering strong performances: he was on his third consecutive Premier League start, having scored a goal at Chelsea two weeks earlier.
The injury comes at the worst possible time for the 19-year-old player. The day before, Zinédine Zidane had unveiled his France A squad list without including Tel, despite several notable absences — Dembélé, Lepaul, Akliouche — that seemed to open an opportunity. It was ultimately Pablo Pagis, from Paris FC, who seized the available spot.
Called up again with the U21s, Tel is now joint top scorer in the history of the France U21 selection, with 17 goals in 24 appearances. But his presence at the Clairefontaine gathering on Monday remains uncertain, with his ankle condition needing to be assessed first.
