Hemdani already under pressure: double clash against Togo could seal his fate
Recently appointed as Algeria's head coach, Brahim Hemdani faces November 14 and 17 with a mixed record. According to sources close to the federation, the two Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Togo could determine whether he stays in the job.
Brahim Hemdani has only managed three matches at the helm of Algeria, but his future as head coach could already be decided during the next international break in November, against Togo.
Recently named coach of the Fennecs, the tactician has a contrasting record after his opening fixtures: a convincing victory against Zambia (3-1) in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, a disappointing draw conceded against Burundi (2-2), then a friendly win over Niger (2-1). Results that have not entirely dispelled doubts arising from a first gathering judged unconvincing in terms of play and collective performance.
Algeria will face Togo twice for the 3rd and 4th matchdays of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying: first at home on Saturday, November 14, then away on Tuesday, November 17. According to Fennec Football, these two encounters represent more than just a sporting challenge for the Greens — they would directly condition Hemdani’s continuation on the Algerian bench. His situation has been closely monitored since he took office, and poor results against Togo’s Hawks could represent a point of no return.
The pressure is therefore considerable for a coach whose room for manoeuvre has already narrowed after just one gathering. Ibrahim Maza’s teammates will need to deliver on the pitch to give their coach a reprieve and keep Algeria on track in their bid to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations.
