Matvey Safonov has been delivering solid performances in goal for Paris Saint-Germain, but his starting position could be questioned as early as this winter. According to journalist Graeme Bailey (TEAMtalk), the capital club is keeping a close eye on Zion Suzuki, a 24-year-old Japanese international now playing for Aston Villa.

This is not a new matter. PSG had already attempted to sign Suzuki during last summer’s transfer window, but negotiations collapsed in the final hours due to disagreement with the player’s entourage. This failure apparently has not dampened Paris’s interest.

Luis Enrique had publicly expressed his satisfaction with Safonov last month: “He is a goalkeeper who fits very well with what we are looking for, what we like in modern football. He is very brave, he does everything we want to start actions and to defend.” Flattering words that contrast with the club’s supposed desire to strengthen this position.

Suzuki, signed by Aston Villa for €30 million after his spell at Parma, is making a convincing start in the Premier League. His profile would also attract the attention of Real Madrid, which speaks to his standing in the European market. A player of this caliber would not arrive in Paris with the status of a mere backup.

If the transfer were to materialize, the hierarchy of PSG’s goalkeepers would be profoundly disrupted. Safonov, currently number one, and Lucas Chevalier, third in the rotation, would both find themselves in a more precarious situation. PSG would then have a trio of goalkeepers with ambitions that are difficult to reconcile.
