Lampard credits Coventry's passionate fanbase as a key weapon in Premier League survival bid
Frank Lampard has highlighted the bond between Coventry City's players and supporters as one of the club's greatest assets as they adjust to Premier League football for the first time in 25 years.
Frank Lampard believes Coventry City’s supporters can function as a genuine 12th man as the Sky Blues attempt to establish themselves back in the Premier League following a 25-year absence from the top flight.
Speaking after Coventry’s defeat at Everton on Friday, Lampard pointed to the deep connection between the squad and the fanbase as a defining strength of the club — one he expects to be tested, and ultimately vindicated, over the course of the season.
“The connection between players and fans is a huge thing,” Lampard said. “It’s a two-way thing, with the players performing with passion and energy. Once that engages the fans and we have their backing, it can really heighten performance and make the Coventry Building Society Arena a very difficult place for opposition teams to come.”
Lampard guided Coventry back to the Premier League after a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers in April, completing a remarkable journey that had seen the club sink as low as League Two in 2017 before three promotions in nine years returned them to the top flight.
For the manager, that promotion carried particular weight given the turbulence Coventry and its supporters had endured before his arrival. “I saw the Coventry story from the outside, and it was obviously a difficult story in football,” he said. “A top-tier club that was going through so many challenges. They have a certain robustness and resilience because of what they’ve been through, which is relatively unique. It’s brought not just a football club, but a city together.”
Lampard was also careful to credit his players for sustaining the relationship with supporters, arguing that genuine commitment on the pitch is what makes the bond meaningful. “When fans see players who give everything for the club and show that they’re not just passing through and they’re actually loving being at Coventry, that starts the connection,” he said.
With Coventry making a modest start to Premier League life, Lampard acknowledged the atmosphere at the Coventry Building Society Arena will be crucial in tight moments. “In certain tough moments, when the fans are behind the players, they can lift them and help them find renewed confidence,” he added. “We’ve got an incredible fanbase and it’s one of the biggest strengths of the football club.”
The manager also expressed personal gratitude for the backing he has received since taking charge. “I’m certainly very appreciative of the support they’ve given me, and I try to keep working as hard as I can to keep getting it and paying my bit back.”
