Gary Neville reveals the goal driving The Overlap five years after its launch
Gary Neville has outlined his ambition to make The Overlap the biggest non-live independent football channel, and says the launch of a daily podcast was driven by a desire to react faster to breaking news.
Gary Neville has set out his long-term ambition for The Overlap, the YouTube channel he founded in 2021, describing his goal of building it into the biggest non-live independent football channel in the world.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, the former Manchester United and England right-back said the vision was present from the very beginning. “When we started five years ago, I did say that I felt I wanted it to be the biggest non-live independent football channel,” Neville said. “But that’s just a statement. You have to have ambition, you have to believe in it, you have to take risks and you have to be entrepreneurial. You have to bring people on the journey with you, and you have to bring partners and stakeholders. We’ve done that, but I don’t ever take that for granted.”
The 51-year-old drew a direct line between the competitive mindset that defined his playing career and the way he now approaches his media work. “Playing football, it’s a fight every single day to win, to be the best that you can be and I think it’s still like that when you’re doing this,” he said.
A key development for The Overlap is the addition of a daily podcast, a format Neville says the team had been planning for two years. The decision to finally act was crystallised by a specific moment: Ruben Amorim’s sacking as Manchester United manager fell during a gap in the channel’s schedule, leaving Neville and his team unable to respond. “We recorded Stick To Football on a Wednesday, it goes out on a Thursday, then on the Monday at 10am, Ruben Amorim got sacked and we weren’t on for 10 days,” he explained. “I thought ‘That doesn’t feel right, we should be on’. When we’re on, we’re good at talking about things like that, but we’d never do ‘an emergency show’ that’s not scheduled.”
Neville said the daily format would allow The Overlap to be more reactive without compromising the standards he has insisted on since the channel launched. “From day one, whether it’s been the guests or the hosts, we’ve wanted to operate at a high standard and have a high bar for ourselves,” he added.
