Manchester United supporter groups have coordinated a fresh wave of protests for Sunday’s Premier League home fixture against Aston Villa at Old Trafford, calling on fans to boycott in-stadium alcohol purchases and stage a 21st-minute walkout in opposition to the club’s ownership.

The campaign, driven by groups including Reclaim the Stretford End, The 1958, The Red Army, Manchester United Youth Supporters’ Club, South Stand United and Retro Reds, is branded ‘Reclaim Our Colours’. Alongside the spending boycott, fans are being asked to release balloons when the players come out to warm up before kick-off.

The protests build on visible demonstrations during United’s midweek Europa League win over Roma, where green and gold balloons were released and chants directed at the Glazer family and INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe rang around the stadium. Three supporters were arrested after throwing tennis balls onto the pitch, briefly halting play.

A separate graphic circulating on social media calls for fans to leave the ground in the 21st minute — a direct reference to 21 years of Glazer ownership. Supporter groups have asked those taking part to respect the pre-match minute’s silence for Remembrance Sunday before the protests begin.

The stated grievances behind the campaign are wide-ranging: the ownership structure, the club’s significant debt levels, plans to demolish Old Trafford in favour of a new 100,000-seat stadium, perceived disrespect towards supporters, the erosion of match-going culture and a broader decline in standards at the club.

The timing adds further pressure to an already fraught situation on the pitch. United head into the weekend sitting 17th in the Premier League table, outside the relegation zone only on goal difference, and are enduring their worst start to a league season since 1986, having won just one of their opening nine matches.

Manager Michael Carrick, 45, retained his position despite a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth but remains under intense scrutiny. Club executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox have reportedly sounded out potential replacements including Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte. A defeat to Villa on Sunday could prove decisive for Carrick’s future.
