Malott's second-round knee KO stuns MMA world and extends winning streak to five
Mike Malott knocked out Joaquin Buckley with a highlight-reel knee in the second round of the UFC Edmonton main event, extending his winning streak to five and strengthening his case for a welterweight title shot.
Mike Malott delivered one of the most brutal finishes of the year, knocking out Joaquin Buckley with a highlight-reel knee in the second round of the UFC Edmonton main event to extend his winning streak to five fights.
The Canadian welterweight carried enormous expectation into the bout as he pursues what would be the UFC’s first Canadian championship since Georges St-Pierre. He met that pressure head-on, sending Buckley crashing to the canvas in a finish that drew immediate reactions from fighters across the sport. “His mouthpiece flew about 20 feet,” was among the responses circulating on social media as the MMA community absorbed the violence of the stoppage.
Former title challenger Gilbert Burns — whom Malott defeated this past April — was among those reacting in amazement, alongside Tatiana Suarez, Arnold Allen, and Kenny Florian. Not all responses were celebratory: UFC featherweight Kai Kamaka struck a more sombre note, posting “Praying for Buckley” on Twitter in response to Buckley’s alarming collapse to the canvas.
The win builds on an already compelling résumé. Malott’s victory over Burns in April had already signalled he was ready to compete at the top of the welterweight division, and a main-event knockout of Buckley — himself a one-time title contender — makes it increasingly difficult for the UFC to overlook him when the next title opportunity arises.
With five consecutive wins and a growing list of notable scalps, Malott has positioned himself as the most credible Canadian contender in the promotion since St-Pierre’s era, and the manner of Saturday’s finish will only accelerate the conversation around when, not if, he gets his shot at gold.
