Tarkowski's stoppage-time header denies Bournemouth first win under Marco Rose

James Tarkowski rescued a 1-1 Premier League draw for Everton at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, capitalising on a defensive mix-up in the 91st minute to deny Bournemouth a first win under head coach Marco Rose. Alex Scott’s 41st-minute opener had looked set to give the Cherries all three points until Tarkowski drilled home following a corner, after Ryan Christie and Marcus Tavernier failed to clear.

Scott’s goal came after Evanilson tormented Tarkowski down the right before picking out the midfielder, who worked an angle inside the box and dispatched the ball into the bottom-left corner via a deflection off Vitaliy Mykolenko. It was a composed finish that rewarded Bournemouth’s patient build-up play and appeared to be enough to secure a morale-boosting result for Rose’s side.

Everton’s Thierno Barry, in the form of his life after a hat-trick in the midweek Carabao Cup win at Preston, squandered several chances to level. He fired into the side-netting late in the first half and was denied by a fine Djordje Petrovic save early in the second period after being slipped in by Harrison Armstrong.

Bournemouth should have put the game beyond doubt 11 minutes from time. Jordan Pickford produced a superb diving save to deny Rayan, and with the goal gaping, Evanilson’s follow-up was somehow diverted behind by substitute Hayden Hackney. Evanilson then headed wide from the resulting corner, and Scott later saw a curling effort acrobatically blocked by Mykolenko.

Those missed opportunities proved costly. When a corner dropped into the Bournemouth box in the first minute of added time, Christie and Tavernier’s miscommunication allowed Tarkowski to pounce and drill the ball home, snatching a point for David Moyes’ side.

Armstrong started for Everton amid reports of a £40 million bid from Nottingham Forest, with James Garner the only change from last weekend’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. Bournemouth were unchanged from their 2-1 defeat at Manchester City, and had arrived at the Vitality Stadium buoyed by Friday’s Europa League draw against AC Milan.
