Federico Chiesa set to leave Liverpool in January after just one appearance this season
Federico Chiesa is close to departing Liverpool in January, according to reports, having made only one appearance under Andoni Iraola this season. The Italian winger, valued at €10 million, is expected to return to Serie A after a difficult two years at Anfield.
Federico Chiesa is on the verge of leaving Liverpool in January, TEAMtalk report, with the Italian winger having played just once under manager Andoni Iraola this season. The 29-year-old, described as “suffering” at Anfield, joined Liverpool in 2024 but has struggled to establish himself, making only 14 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign.
Chiesa’s time on Merseyside has been heavily disrupted by injury, and with Liverpool having significantly strengthened their attacking options over the summer, his path to regular first-team football has narrowed considerably. The club brought in Bradley Barcola for over £100 million and added Victor Munoz, while also navigating the departure of Mohamed Salah after nine years.
Iraola now has an abundance of attacking talent to manage, including Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike — the latter currently sidelined through injury. With so many options competing for forward positions, Chiesa has found himself on the periphery, and a return to Italy is increasingly likely given his consistent links to Serie A clubs throughout his two years at the club.
Transfermarkt values Chiesa at €10 million, a figure that reflects both his injury record and limited playing time in England. He did make history during his first season, becoming only the second Italian player ever to win the Premier League title.
Liverpool’s broader squad picture remains unsettled. The futures of goalkeeper Alisson, captain Virgil van Dijk, and midfielder Alexis Mac Allister are all yet to be resolved, suggesting the January window could bring further movement at Anfield beyond just Chiesa’s expected departure.
On the pitch, Iraola’s side have shown inconsistency in attack in recent weeks, failing to register a single shot on target against Arsenal at the weekend. While Isak has been in strong form and Gakpo has impressed under the new manager, questions remain over how best to deploy the club’s wealth of forward options — a puzzle that may become slightly easier to solve once Chiesa moves on.
