AS Saint-Etienne officially announced on Wednesday the signing of Etienne Mendy, an 18-year-old Senegalese striker from Diambars, one of African football’s leading academies. The player, also courted by Manchester United, chose the Forez club to launch his professional career.

“It is a great honour to join ASSE, a true privilege for me,” Mendy declared. “I am a quick winger, I come here with the desire to be decisive and work hard to one day integrate the professional squad of this great club.”

Sports director Loïc Perrin confirmed that the club has been monitoring the player for some time. “Étienne is a player we have been following for a long time. He is an attacking profile with huge potential, with qualities of pace and power,” he said, adding that Mendy will initially join the reserve team “before he is ready to aim higher”.

Despite Manchester United’s interest, Mendy opted for Saint-Etienne as a springboard to professional football. His spell with the Greens’ reserve team will constitute the first step of a journey the club hopes will lead to integration into Ian Cathro’s squad.
