Max Dowman scored twice as Arsenal beat Ipswich 4-2 in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday night, with the 16-year-old’s performance earning an extraordinary comparison from teammate Mikel Merino, who likened the teenager to Barcelona and Spain superstar Lamine Yamal.

The brace made Dowman only the second 16-year-old to score twice for a Premier League club, a feat previously achieved by Wayne Rooney for Everton against Wrexham back in 2002. Beyond the goals, Dowman contributed defensively, pressing Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton to create Noni Madueke’s goal and making a key tackle on Florentino Luis just two minutes after his second strike.

Spain international Merino, who has played alongside Yamal on the international stage, was unequivocal in his admiration. “I would say there are some similarities in terms of their character,” the Arsenal midfielder said. “They don’t care about the spotlight, they thrive when pressure is at the highest, they are always up for the challenge and they are not shy at all — even facing the biggest names in the game.”

Merino was equally keen to stress the importance of managing Dowman’s development carefully. “You want Max to shine and you want him to express himself and show everyone the talent that he has, but at the same time you have to sometimes remind them that they are human beings and they are part of a bigger squad and team,” he said.

The midfielder highlighted Dowman’s attitude as a key factor in his potential longevity. “The good thing with these kind of players — Lamine and Max — is that they are special talents, but at the same time they are very humble. They are always keen to learn and listen to the veterans. That is priceless.”

Dowman’s timing is notable. England manager Thomas Tuchel is due to name his squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures this week, and while a call-up for the teenager is considered unlikely at this stage, performances of this calibre will only intensify the conversation around his international future.

Merino left no doubt about where Arsenal stand on their young forward. “Honestly, he is an unbelievable talent. We knew it, but every time he goes on the pitch and plays against grown men — even being 16 or 17 — he makes the difference. He is a big talent and we have to take care of him.”
