Gabriel omitted from Man Utd's Carabao Cup squad as exit request overshadows teenager's future

JJ Gabriel was absent from Manchester United’s squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton at Old Trafford, days after it emerged the 15-year-old had formally asked to leave the club. The teenager had been expected to feature as he awaits a senior debut, having appeared during pre-season, but manager Michael Carrick did not include him among his options.

Despite Gabriel submitting a formal notice of his desire to become a free agent, United believe the situation remains resolvable. The club’s position is reinforced by Premier League rules, which state that a player’s registration can only be cancelled during a registration period if all parties — the club, the player, and their parent or guardian — agree. Gabriel cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17, and scholarship agreements are not permitted until he is 16.

According to the Daily Mail, Gabriel’s father, Joe O’Cearuill, has taken issue with three aspects of how United have managed his son’s development. Chief among them is the pace of his progression toward the first team. O’Cearuill was reportedly frustrated that Gabriel was not included in squads for matches against Ipswich and Sabah — games where some in the camp felt the youngster could have made his senior bow.

Instead, Gabriel featured for United’s youth side against Sabah’s academy team, scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 win in the UEFA Youth League — a match in which United registered 44 shots to their opponents’ zero. The performance underlined the teenager’s talent, even as the dispute over his future escalated behind the scenes.

Last week, Gabriel deleted all posts from his Instagram account, which prompted concern among supporters and those following his situation closely.

United’s starting line-up against Brighton featured Karl Darlow in goal, with Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, and Noussair Mazraoui in defence. Mason Mount, Andrey Santos, and Youri Tielemans formed the midfield, while Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko, and Shea Lacey started in attack. Substitutes included Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire, Mateus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Joshua Zirkzee.
