Lingard reveals false promises and silent exit that soured his Manchester United farewell

Jesse Lingard has opened up about the broken promises and lack of communication that defined the end of his Manchester United career, revealing he was denied even a farewell appearance before leaving the club he joined as a seven-year-old.

Lingard, who spent the majority of his career at Old Trafford from the academy through to the first team, says he was assured of a meaningful role following an impressive loan spell at West Ham in the second half of the 2020/21 season, where he scored nine goals in 16 appearances and won the Premier League Player of the Month award. That promise, he claims, was never honoured.

“It was false promises,” Lingard told The Telegraph in 2022. “I was training hard and I was sharp, I was ready to play… When you’re working hard in training and don’t play at the end of it, it’s very frustrating.”

Despite returning to United with renewed confidence, Lingard made just two Premier League starts across the entire 2021/22 season. The situation reached a painful low when then-manager Ralf Rangnick left him as an unused substitute during the final home game of the campaign, stripping him of any chance to say goodbye to the Old Trafford crowd.

“I don’t know what the problem was, whether it was politics or whatever. I still haven’t got an answer to this day,” he said. “I didn’t even ask. I’d rather that someone out of respect for me being there that long told me, ‘This is why you’re not playing,’ but I never got that.”

Lingard had been a significant figure at United across a decade in the first-team picture, serving under Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His most memorable contribution came in the 2016 FA Cup final, where his extra-time winner secured the club’s first major trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

After leaving United, Lingard spent a single season at Nottingham Forest before taking an unexpected route to FC Seoul in South Korea, where he captained the side for two years. He has since moved to Brazilian club Corinthians, where he currently plays.

The context for revisiting Lingard’s United exit is a Carabao Cup third-round tie between Middlesbrough, managed by Michael Carrick — Lingard’s former United team-mate — and Brighton, another of Lingard’s former clubs. During a loan spell on the south coast earlier in his career, Lingard left a positive impression. Former Brighton team-mate Andrea Orlandi recalled in 2015: “When he was at Brighton, I liked his attitude. Very calm and relaxed.” It is a description that stands in sharp contrast to how his time at United ultimately concluded.
