Ronald Koeman's wife Bartina dies at 65 after breast cancer battle

Ronald Koeman announced on Wednesday that his wife Bartina has died at the age of 65 after a prolonged battle with breast cancer. The former Netherlands manager shared a black-and-white photograph of the couple on social media, writing: “With deep sorrow, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my wonderful wife, our dearest mom and grandma.”

Koeman had spoken openly about Bartina’s illness during the Netherlands’ run at this year’s World Cup, expressing hope in June that she might be able to pause her weekly treatment and travel to the United States if the team reached the final. Following their round-of-32 exit against Morocco, he stepped down as national team manager, citing her health as a central reason for his departure.

“The past years have made me realize again that there are more important things than football,” Koeman wrote on Instagram on June 30. “Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes.”

He also paid tribute to his wife’s resilience throughout his tenure with the Dutch squad. “My wife Bartina has supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as a national coach despite her own illness process. That is a testimony to incredible strength.”

Koeman and Bartina were married for 41 years. Beyond his two spells managing the Netherlands, he has coached Barcelona, Everton, and Southampton, and is widely regarded as one of the finest defenders of his generation. He played a key role in the Netherlands’ European Championship triumph in 1988 and won European Cup titles with both PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona.

His most iconic moment as a player came at Wembley Stadium in 1992, when he scored the decisive goal as Barcelona beat Sampdoria 1-0 after extra time to claim their first European Cup.

Barcelona were among those to pay tribute, with the club stating: “FC Barcelona and its supporters send their deepest condolences and affection to Ronald Koeman and his family for the passing of his wife, Bartina Koeman. May she rest in peace.”
