Premier League injury round-up: Arsenal, United and City hit hard after international break
The Premier League returns this weekend with several clubs counting the cost of the international break. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Brentford are among the sides dealing with fresh injury concerns ahead of a packed fixture list.
The Premier League resumes this weekend with a number of clubs managing significant injury lists after a congested international break that squeezed four fixtures into three weeks.
Arsenal head into the weekend without William Saliba, who has been sidelined for some time, while Ezri Konsa — a potential replacement — withdrew from England duty with a muscle issue, casting doubt over his availability. Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera missed the defeat to Brighton but are expected to return, while Kai Havertz and Christos Tzolis both picked up knocks on international duty and face weeks on the sidelines rather than months.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is dealing with a long-term absence for Amadou Onana following an ACL injury, while new signing Leon Goretzka has only just returned to availability after the break. Ian Maatsen is also out, with Emery warning the full-back could be sidelined for “a long, long time.” Pau Torres and Marco Bizot are listed as doubts.
Bournemouth are frustrated over the handling of Alex Scott during England duty. The midfielder felt a thigh problem before the win over Croatia but played 70 minutes before being substituted, and now faces up to eight weeks out. Julian Araujo, Justin Kluivert and Veljko Milosavljevic will all miss this weekend’s fixture. Eli Junior Kroupi, recovering from pre-season foot surgery, is targeting a return before next month’s international break.
Brentford will be without Mikkel Damsgaard, who sustained an ankle injury while on international duty, and Kaye Furo, who has undergone an operation. Mathias Jensen is a doubt but may feature, while Josh DaSilva has returned to full fitness.
The injury news arrives ahead of a weekend of high-profile fixtures. Manchester United host Tottenham in a clash between two managers under pressure, while Manchester City face Liverpool in their first match since the club’s guilty verdict in their long-running Premier League charges case.
