Manchester City face dual UEFA and Premier League sanctions after guilty verdict on 114 charges
Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of 115 Premier League financial charges and now face a second front, with UEFA reportedly monitoring the case and prepared to act once the club's appeal is resolved.
Manchester City face potential punishment from two governing bodies after being found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League, with UEFA now reportedly monitoring the case and weighing whether to take independent action.
Among the charges is an allegation that City arranged “sham” sponsorship deals to artificially inflate their revenues by approximately £900 million, covering a period between 2009 and 2018. The club has submitted an appeal, insisting it holds a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” that would clear its name. A three-person panel will oversee the appeal, with a ruling expected before the end of the season.
According to reports, UEFA is “monitoring developments” from the Premier League case and will decide whether to pursue its own proceedings once the final outcome of City’s appeal is known. The governing body is understood to be withholding any decision until that process concludes.
This is not the first time City have faced European-level scrutiny. In 2020, UEFA found the club guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play regulations and handed down a two-season ban from European competition alongside a €30 million fine. City appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which overturned the ban and reduced the fine to €10 million.
Should City’s current appeal fail, the range of potential Premier League sanctions in circulation includes a points deduction, a financial penalty, the stripping of past titles, and in the most extreme scenario, expulsion from the league itself. No formal punishment has yet been determined, and the process remains ongoing.
