Kai Rooney passes all GCSEs and earns sixth-form place while recovering from injury
Coleen Rooney celebrated on social media after her 16-year-old son Kai, a Manchester United academy midfielder, passed all of his GCSE exams and secured a sixth-form place — all while managing a first-year scholarship at Old Trafford.
Kai Rooney passed all of his GCSE exams and earned a place in sixth form, his mother Coleen confirmed on Instagram on results day, sharing a photo of the pair grinning together.
The 16-year-old has been part of Manchester United’s academy since rejoining the club at the age of 11 and recently signed a first-year scholarship deal that allows him to continue his studies alongside his football development. He could be eligible to sign a professional contract once he turns 17.
“GCSE results day!! Super proud @kairooney.10… Great results, especially with a busy schedule, all passed and a place in 6th form!! We love you,” Coleen wrote in her post.
The milestone comes after a difficult season for the midfielder, who suffered a season-ending injury in March that ruled him out of the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City. Before the setback, Kai had made a notable impression in Darren Fletcher’s under-18 side, making his U18 debut at 15 and contributing two goals and an assist across six Premier League outings at that level. He also featured for 21 minutes at Old Trafford in United’s FA Youth Cup fourth-round win over Derby County.
Kai’s father, club legend Wayne Rooney, did not sit his own GCSEs at the same age, instead pursuing self-education during his playing career. Wayne previously reflected on that path, explaining that he made a deliberate effort to educate himself on subjects including black history and religion in order to better understand and connect with team-mates from different backgrounds.
Kai returned to action last week after recovering from his injury, joining United’s squad for the Otten Cup in Eindhoven. He confirmed his comeback on Instagram with the caption: “First game back from injury. PSV (A).” United lost their opening fixture of the tournament 1-0 to hosts PSV, with Kai part of a 23-man squad that also included Jacey Carrick, son of United head coach Michael Carrick.
