Man City academy midfielder Charlie Gray seals season-long loan move to Wigan Athletic
Manchester City's Charlie Gray has joined League One side Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan. The 20-year-old, who made his senior City debut in December's Carabao Cup win over Brentford, was named EDS Players' Player of the Season in 2024/25.
Manchester City midfielder Charlie Gray has completed a season-long loan move to League One club Wigan Athletic, with both clubs confirming the deal.
The 20-year-old made his senior debut for City in December when the Blues beat Brentford 2-0 in the Carabao Cup, and was named the EDS Players’ Player of the Season for 2024/25. Gray had been absent from City’s Under-21s squad for their EFL Trophy victory over Mansfield Town on Wednesday night, and was spotted watching Wigan’s game against Aston Villa Under-21s on Tuesday — signs that a move was imminent.
“I’m really happy to be here and excited to be on my first loan and come to such a big club like Wigan with such an experienced head coach,” Gray told Wigan’s official website. “The playing style suits how I like to play, so I’m really excited. I think it’s really important when you get to the age that I am now to get out and get some men’s football under your belt. It’s a completely different game to what U21s football is, and I can’t wait to get started.”
City’s official statement acknowledged Gray’s progress through the academy ranks: “Gray shone again at EDS level last term, with his performances drawing the attention of first team coaches for that call-up to the senior side. Everyone at City would like to wish Charlie the very best of luck this season.”
Gray joined City as an Under-nine and has won both the FA Youth Cup and the Premier League 2 title during his time in the academy. At Wigan, he will link up with former City teammate Finley Burns, the defender who joined the Latics for £200,000 earlier this month.
Gray could make his debut for Wigan as early as Saturday when they host Leyton Orient. City are expected to sanction several more academy loans before the transfer window closes, with a number of youngsters identified for moves away from the Etihad to further their development.
