Álvarez rejects London life as Arsenal's summer pursuit hits a wall
Julián Álvarez is unwilling to relocate to London, effectively blocking Arsenal's concrete offer for the Atlético Madrid forward. Barcelona's pursuit remains deadlocked on finances, leaving the 26-year-old set to stay in Madrid.
Julián Álvarez has emerged as one of the summer’s most complicated transfer targets after Arsenal’s pursuit stalled — not over money, but over the Argentina international’s reluctance to live in London. SER Deportivos journalist Pedro Fullana reports that Mikel Arteta’s side are the only club currently willing to table a viable offer, yet Álvarez is not prepared to move to the English capital.
Barcelona had been tracking the 26-year-old as an alternative route out of Atlético Madrid, but that pursuit has hit a financial deadlock, leaving the World Cup winner content to stay at the Metropolitano rather than push for a departure. With no other serious suitors making meaningful progress, the transfer situation has effectively reached a standstill.
Atlético, for their part, appear unconcerned. The club are reportedly building their 2025-26 campaign around Álvarez following his 20-goal contribution last season, and their summer recruitment is focused elsewhere — specifically on Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva’s availability. That strategy is contingent on retaining Álvarez, whose contract runs until June 2030.
Any movement on the forward’s future will have to wait regardless. Álvarez is currently focused on Argentina’s defence of their World Cup title in North America, with the reigning champions opening Group J against Algeria in Kansas City on 16 June before facing Austria and Jordan. Domestic transfer discussions are expected to resume only once the tournament concludes.
Until then, Arsenal, Atlético and Barcelona are all left in limbo — the Gunners with an offer that the player has no appetite to accept, Barça unable to make the numbers work, and Atlético quietly confident their man is going nowhere.
