Garry confronts unbeaten Morales backstage after UFC 330 title loss: 'Back it up'
Despite losing a unanimous decision to welterweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 330, Ian Garry sought out undefeated contender Michael Morales backstage to address their ongoing feud and urge him to let his fighting do the talking.
Ian Garry walked away from UFC 330 without the welterweight title but wasted little time making his presence felt backstage, confronting undefeated Ecuadorian contender Michael Morales in a tense face-to-face exchange following his unanimous decision loss to champion Islam Makhachev.
Morales (19-0) had weighed in as a backup fighter for the card and was present at the event when Garry (17-2) pushed Makhachev (29-1) in the main event, ultimately falling short on all three judges’ scorecards. Despite the defeat, Garry approached Morales directly to address a simmering rivalry — and Morales barely responded.
“All the s*** you talk, it’s OK. Make sure you back it up,” Garry told Morales. “I don’t know whatever story you made up about meeting me; I’ve never encountered that sort, you know that, right? Listen, you’re a good fighter. Show up, keep winning, and you can do anything.”
Garry went on to outline the scale of the opportunities ahead of Morales in the 170-pound division, name-dropping himself, rising contender Carlos Prates, and champion Makhachev as potential opponents. “You’ve got massive fights in this division,” he said. “Show up and fight. Does that make sense?”
The Irishman then shifted tone, offering what amounted to a backhanded compliment before returning to his central message. “You’re an animal. You’re strong,” Garry added. “In this sport, people talk s**t; I ignore it. You’re young, you’re strong up here, and that means you can do anything. Spread good, do good. You knock people out, you beat people up, that’s what gets respect. We’re the new generation of the sport; change it.”
The feud between the two welterweights originated from an alleged altercation involving Garry and a teammate of Morales at the UFC Performance Institute. Morales subsequently claimed that Garry had already left the facility by the time he arrived to support his friend, disputing the sequence of events. The backstage confrontation at UFC 330 marks the most direct exchange between the two fighters to date.
With Makhachev retaining his title, the welterweight division’s contender picture remains unsettled. Morales is pushing for the next title shot, but Makhachev has publicly identified Prates as the most deserving challenger — leaving Garry, Morales, and Prates all jostling for position at the top of the division.
