Makhachev survives Garry's grappling overhaul to retain welterweight title at UFC 330
Islam Makhachev edged Ian Machado Garry by decision in a gruelling five-round welterweight title fight at UFC 330, extending his UFC winning streak to a record 17 consecutive victories.
Islam Makhachev retained the UFC welterweight title at UFC 330, grinding out a five-round decision victory over Ian Machado Garry in what the champion described as a genuinely difficult night’s work. The Dagestani leaned on his wrestling throughout, but Garry — coached by former UFC fighter Demian Maia — repeatedly disrupted his takedown and submission attempts in a way few challengers have managed.
Speaking to Joe Rogan in his post-fight interview, Makhachev was candid about the challenge Garry posed. “Yeah, he’s a great fighter, good man and I just respect him,” he said. “He gave me a hard time, but I still prove every fight.” When pressed on whether it ranked as the toughest fight of his career, Makhachev stopped short of that verdict, suggesting his first meeting with Alexander Volkanovski was at least comparable.
Makhachev was notably generous in crediting Maia for Garry’s visible grappling improvements. “He improved a lot,” the champion said. “He is working with one of the best fighter coaches, Demian Maia. That’s why I see he improved his grappling also.”
The win pushed Makhachev’s UFC winning streak to 17 fights, a new record for the promotion. The result cements his status as the dominant force at 170 pounds, though the road back to another title shot is already taking shape around him. Carlos Prates and Michael Morales are both positioned as contenders for the welterweight crown, meaning Garry will need to navigate at least one high-stakes fight before his name re-enters the title conversation.
