Fernando finishes Tobias at UFC 330 after wife talked him out of quitting MMA

Lucas Fernando (14-3) stopped Rafael Tobias in the third round on his UFC debut at UFC 330, finishing with a knee to the body and follow-up strikes. The Brazilian light heavyweight revealed his wife convinced him to stay in MMA after a 2023 Contender Series loss nearly ended his career.

Lucas Fernando made an emphatic UFC debut at UFC 330, stopping Rafael Tobias in the third round with a knee to the body and vicious follow-up strikes to earn his first promotional victory. The Brazilian light heavyweight, now 14-3, put on a striking clinic before the finish sealed one of the more unlikely breakthrough performances on the card.

What made the win all the more remarkable was how close Fernando came to never reaching the UFC at all. Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Fernando revealed that a 2023 loss on Dana White’s Contender Series had left him questioning whether to continue in mixed martial arts entirely.

“After the loss in Contender, I called her up and said, ‘You know, maybe this is not for me. I should look for something else. Or maybe I shouldn’t dedicate to this 100%,’” Fernando said. “She said no. She believed in me, she supported me, she supported this dream of mine to be in the UFC.”

Fernando’s road back was far from straightforward. Following the decision loss to Cesar Almeida at DWCS, he suffered another defeat in the Legacy Fighting Alliance before turning his career around with four consecutive victories. That run included winning and defending the LFA light heavyweight title twice, ultimately earning him a second shot at the UFC.

At the press conference, Fernando also called his wife live, telling her he missed her and couldn’t wait to return to Brazil after spending a month training in the United States. The moment underlined just how much her support had shaped his path to the promotion.

Fernando’s debut performance — controlled, clinical, and finished with authority — will have put the UFC’s light heavyweight division on notice that a new contender has arrived, one who came within a phone call of walking away from the sport altogether.
