Mackenzie Dern retained the UFC strawweight title at UFC 330 on Saturday, defeating Gillian Robertson by lopsided decision across five rounds in the co-main event at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. The champion controlled the bout throughout, out-grappling a challenger who had publicly declared herself the superior grappler in the build-up.

Dern came close to a finish on multiple occasions but Robertson’s durability and defensive grappling skills kept the fight going the distance. The champion showed notable improvements to both her wrestling and striking in her first title defence, though her elite Brazilian jiu-jitsu remained the primary weapon.

“I’m super happy,” Dern said in her post-fight interview. “My first title win. I got taken down a lot of times, so I’ve been working on my wrestling. I’m still the champion.”

Robertson had been vocal in the lead-up to UFC 330, insisting she was the better grappler and that the matchup played into her strengths. Dern acknowledged she had set out specifically to submit the Canadian, but admitted fatigue in the championship rounds and Robertson’s defensive resilience made that increasingly difficult.

“I try to get submissions in all my fights,” Dern said. “I wish I could do some more damage to set up the submissions better, but she’s good. Like in the fourth and fifth rounds, my legs started to feel a little bit tired.”

The victory cements Dern’s status as the division’s champion and answers any lingering questions about her ability to control a full five-round championship fight. Robertson, for her part, showed the durability and grappling defence that earned her the title shot, but was unable to impose her game on a champion who matched her on the mat and outworked her everywhere else.
