Newcastle face six-man injury crisis after 4-1 humbling at Leeds

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle is confronting a deepening injury crisis after Monday’s 4-1 defeat at Elland Road left him potentially without six first-team players for this weekend’s Championship clash with Hull City.

Winger Anthony Elanga did not make it to kick-off, withdrawing before the game with a problem Jaissle described in stark terms post-match. « The injury doesn’t look good. We need to investigate how serious it is. Elanga is struggling with injury but at the moment it does not look that good, » the manager said.

Middfielder Jacob Ramsey was named among the substitutes but never entered the field after feeling his thigh during the warm-up. Jaissle confirmed the setback: « He felt his thigh in the warm-up so he was not able to play tonight. That was the next challenge. Tonight the story was many things came together. It does not look good for the weekend at the moment. »

The problems continued during the match itself when Nico Gonzalez was withdrawn in the first half following a blow to the head. Jaissle was clear that mandatory concussion protocols left him no choice. « With Nico, as a manager and we as a club, we have the responsibility if he has that knock-out feeling as we all saw. We have to be responsible to take him off the pitch even though he looked fine then. But there are rules for that occasion. Independent of how important it is to win a match, we are all human beings, and we take that seriously. »

Right-back Amar Dedic also raised concerns after being substituted in the second half, having entered the Leeds game already carrying a knock from the previous week’s tie against Millwall.

Those fresh worries land on top of a medical room that was already crowded. Joelinton and Dan Burn remain sidelined with ongoing injuries, while Will Osula has been wearing a protective boot since sustaining a foot injury on the opening weekend against Liverpool and is not expected to return until after the international break.

With as many as six first-team regulars potentially unavailable, what might have been a straightforward opportunity to respond to a heavy defeat against newly-promoted Hull City has become a significant tactical problem for Jaissle.
