Zirkzee and Dorgu rescue United in stoppage time but Carrick's future remains in doubt
Manchester United salvaged a dramatic 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday, scoring twice in stoppage time through Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu. The result leaves United 18th in the Premier League, with caretaker manager Michael Carrick's position still uncertain.
Manchester United twice came from two goals down to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu scoring in stoppage time to deny the visitors a comfortable Premier League win. The result is United’s second dramatic late comeback inside a week, following Tuesday’s extraordinary recovery against Roma.
Despite the spectacle, the draw does little to ease United’s plight. They remain in the bottom three, sitting 18th heading into the international break, having won just once in their opening ten Premier League matches. Caretaker manager Michael Carrick was applauded off the pitch by the home support, but his long-term position at the club remains unclear.
Carrick said he expects to continue working with the squad through the break. “We haven’t won enough games, but I expect to move forward and keep working on things that we’ve been working on and showing a lot of the good in the game today,” he said. “We need to tighten up on a few mistakes and win football matches.”
Villa boss Unai Emery was visibly furious after his side surrendered a two-goal lead for the second time in the match, storming down the tunnel before the final whistle following Dorgu’s headed equaliser. Villa also expressed frustration over the goal itself, with Emery’s staff unhappy that United goalkeeper Senne Lammens appeared to obstruct Zion Suzuki before Dorgu converted.
Emery reflected on the collapse with evident disappointment. “I thought we were the better team for large parts of the game,” he said. “We’ve made it difficult for ourselves with the goals that we’ve given away. Not just giving away one — but it’s kind of two in succession that put us in such a difficult position.”
United’s next fixture is a trip to rivals Liverpool, a daunting assignment for a side still searching for consistency. Whether Carrick remains in charge for that match — and beyond — is a question the club has yet to answer publicly.
