Michael Carrick’s position as Manchester United manager is under serious threat after his side squandered a late comeback to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, leaving United in the Premier League relegation zone heading into the international break.

United were in disarray from the opening minutes, conceding twice inside four minutes through Alysson and Nicolas Jackson. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot before Youri Tielemans levelled at 2-2, offering brief hope before the break.

The second half brought more of the same. A John McGinn penalty and a Leon Goretzka goal restored Villa’s two-goal advantage, before Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu struck in stoppage time to salvage an unlikely point. The dramatic finish provided some relief at Old Trafford, but it was not enough to lift United out of the bottom three.

Carrick’s future now dominates the agenda during the international break. According to reports, the United board have yet to agree on a clear plan, though four names have emerged as potential targets: Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, and Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeness — the latter considered a left-field option relative to the others on the list.

The 4-4 result encapsulates United’s turbulent season so far — capable of moments of quality but unable to sustain any defensive or tactical coherence across 90 minutes. Conceding twice in the opening four minutes and twice more at the start of the second half points to structural problems that go beyond a single result.

With no managerial decision confirmed before the break, Carrick faces a tense wait to discover whether he will be in charge when Premier League football resumes.
