Emery storms down tunnel as 10-man United snatch stunning 4-4 draw against Villa in stoppage time
Manchester United trailed Aston Villa 4-2 in the second minute of injury time at Old Trafford before Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu's 96th-minute header rescued a chaotic 4-4 Premier League draw, prompting a furious Unai Emery to leave the pitch before the final whistle.
Manchester United rescued an extraordinary 4-4 draw against Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with Patrick Dorgu heading home in the 96th minute to deny the visitors all three points in one of the most chaotic Premier League matches of the season. Aston Villa boss Unai Emery was so incensed that he stormed down the tunnel before the VAR check had even confirmed the goal — and before the full-time whistle — leaving him unable to shake hands with United manager Michael Carrick at the end.
Villa had looked comfortable heading into stoppage time, leading 4-2 and seemingly coasting to a result that would have lifted them to eighth in the table. Instead, Joshua Zirkzee pulled one back in the 92nd minute to give United a lifeline, and Dorgu then rose highest to head into an empty net after Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki came off his line and failed to claim the ball.
The game had been a rollercoaster from the opening minutes. Villa flew out of the blocks, with Alysson and Nicolas Jackson both scoring inside the first five minutes to establish a 2-0 lead. United fought back before half-time through Bruno Fernandes, who converted from the penalty spot after Boubacar Kamara fouled Matheus Cunha, and Youri Tielemans, who equalised against his former club to make it 2-2.
Villa reasserted control after the restart, scoring twice in seven minutes. John McGinn converted from the spot after Diogo Dalot fouled Alysson, and Leon Goretzka tapped in following more disorganised United defending to make it 4-2. At that stage, the points appeared to be heading to the away dressing room.
The result, combined with United’s midweek comeback victory against Roma, may have provided some relief for Carrick, whose side remain in the Premier League’s bottom three in 18th place heading into the international break. Villa, meanwhile, sit in 10th — a position that will feel deeply frustrating given how close they came to climbing to eighth.
