Carrick deflects sacking questions after United's chaotic 4-4 draw leaves them 18th
Michael Carrick clashed with a reporter over his future after Manchester United drew 4-4 with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with two injury-time substitutes rescuing a point to leave United winless in eight Premier League games.
Michael Carrick grew visibly terse when pressed about his managerial future after Manchester United were held to a chaotic 4-4 draw by Aston Villa at Old Trafford, leaving the club 18th in the Premier League table and winless in eight league games.
United trailed twice before substitutes Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu netted in injury time to salvage a point — a comeback that echoed their 3-2 win over Roma earlier in the week, but did little to ease the pressure on Carrick’s position.
In a pointed post-match exchange, Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison asked Carrick what he expected to happen over the coming weeks. Carrick’s responses were clipped and combative. When Davison suggested there would inevitably be conversations about his future, Carrick replied simply: “Is there?” When pushed further, he turned the question back: “You’re telling me — what do you think?”
Carrick eventually offered a measured answer. “You know the situation, we haven’t won enough games,” he said. “But I expect to move forward with things we’ve been working on, showing a lot of the good from today, tighten up a few mistakes and win some football matches.”
He also pushed back on suggestions that United are embroiled in a relegation battle, having taken eight points from their opening ten matches. “We’re in November,” he replied bluntly. “I don’t like this situation where we are and where we’re at. But we can do something about it.”
United’s defensive display was alarming, with errors from Senne Lammens, Diogo Dalot and Leny Yoro all contributing to Villa’s goals. Carrick acknowledged the problem directly. “There have been too many [goals conceded]. It’s pretty clear. We know that. It’s something we have to put right.”
Club executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox were both present at Old Trafford and face a significant decision during the two-week international break. Carrick has survived previous rounds of crisis talks and is understood to be expecting to continue in the role, but the mood around the club suggests that expectation is far from guaranteed.
