United weigh legal action over JJ Gabriel as Barcelona soften stance on Balde loan
Manchester United are considering regulatory and legal action to block the departure of 15-year-old prodigy JJ Gabriel, who has been training with Barcelona. Separately, the club could revive interest in left-back Alejandro Balde after Barcelona indicated they would sanction a January loan.
Manchester United are exploring potential legal and regulatory action against anyone who facilitates the exit of teenage prodigy JJ Gabriel, as the club braces for a possible transfer battle over one of its most promising academy players.
Gabriel, who is not yet 16, formally requested the cancellation of his youth registration last month — a move United refused. Because he has not reached scholarship age, the club cannot tie him to a professional contract. That changes on Tuesday, 6 October, when Gabriel turns 16. His EU passport eligibility — derived from Irish and Cypriot heritage — opens a loophole that would allow him to sign for a continental club, bypassing standard domestic compensation rules.
Despite Barcelona publicly denying any interest, Gabriel has been training in Catalonia. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also reported to be in discussions, with agent Ali Barat — founder of Epic Sports agency — having secured formal authorisation to represent minors on the family’s behalf. United, according to reports, are now weighing action against any party that negotiates or facilitates his departure, though they would receive only a modest compensation fee if he does leave.
On a separate transfer front, United could yet move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde in January. Balde had been linked with a summer switch to Old Trafford but chose to remain at the Nou Camp and compete for his place. He has since slipped down the pecking order behind Xavi Espart, and Barcelona are now reportedly open to letting him leave on loan. His representatives are said to be actively working to arrange a move, with United among the clubs that had previously considered a bid.
Both developments come as head coach Michael Carrick prepares to welcome his squad back from the international break. United have collected just five points from their opening five Premier League matches — their sole league win a 5-2 home victory over Ipswich Town — and face Tottenham Hotspur on their return to domestic action.
