Barcelona open to loaning Balde to United as Gabriel legal dispute escalates
Manchester United are monitoring Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde for a January loan move, while the club considers legal action to prevent teenage prospect JJ Gabriel from leaving for a continental side.
Manchester United are weighing a January loan move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde and are simultaneously preparing potential legal action to block 15-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel from joining a European club, according to reports during the international break.
Balde loan a possibility after Dorgu injury concern
Balde, 22, was linked with a summer move to Old Trafford but chose to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place. That gamble has not paid off: he has slipped behind Xavi Espart and others in the left-back pecking order, and TEAMtalk reports that Barcelona are now willing to sanction a loan departure in January. Balde’s representatives are said to be actively working to arrange an exit.
United’s interest has been rekindled in part by the injury to Patrick Dorgu, who returned to Manchester during the international break with a suspected hamstring problem sustained while on duty with Denmark. Dorgu had been Michael Carrick’s first choice at left-back, making cover in that position a priority. United chiefs are reported to believe Balde retains significant potential and could develop into a key defensive asset if he recaptures his best form — though he was notably absent from Spain’s World Cup-winning squad.
Gabriel dispute heads toward legal territory
The more urgent and contentious issue surrounds JJ Gabriel, previously regarded as one of United’s most exciting youth prospects. Last month, Gabriel formally requested that his youth registration be cancelled with immediate effect — a move that caught the club off guard. United refused the request.
Because Gabriel has not yet turned 16, the club cannot offer him a scholarship or professional contract. He reaches that milestone on Tuesday, 6 October, at which point he may be able to pursue his objective through other means. Holding an EU passport through Irish and Cypriot ancestry, Gabriel could exploit a regulatory loophole to join a club on the continent. Barcelona have publicly denied interest, yet Gabriel has been training in Catalonia. Real Madrid are also reported to be monitoring the situation.
Should Gabriel leave, United would receive only a modest compensation payment under existing rules. The Sun reports that the club is now contemplating regulatory and potentially legal action against any party that negotiates or facilitates his departure.
Return to domestic action
United have six days before Premier League action resumes against Tottenham. Thirteen first-team players were called up during the extended international break, though Kobbie Mainoo, Karl Darlow, Marcus Rashford, and Benjamin Sesko all stayed behind despite receiving call-ups. Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro received late additions to the Netherlands and France squads respectively. Alongside Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui also picked up a knock, limping off during Morocco’s fixture against Lesotho.
