Throat-Slash Gesture at Strasbourg: Brunner Suspended Two Matches, Monaco Without Top Scorer

Paris Brunner has been handed a two-match ban and two additional suspended matches, announced the Disciplinary Commission of the Professional Football League (LFP). The sanction takes effect from Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and deprives AS Monaco of its top scorer for the next two Ligue 1 matchdays.

The young German striker mimicked a throat-slash gesture toward the Meinau stands in Strasbourg after scoring a goal. The gesture, made in response to insults from certain Alsatian supporters according to the player, was not flagged by the referees at the time, but the Ethics Commission referred the matter to the Disciplinary Commission. Despite Brunner’s public apologies, the sanction was upheld.

With six goals across all competitions since the start of the season, including four in Ligue 1, Brunner is AS Monaco’s top scorer and joint leader of the championship’s scoring chart, level with Kamory Doumbia, Amine Gouiri, Lassine Sinayoko, and Ferran Torres. His absence will be felt during the home match against Toulouse and the away trip to Lorient.

The suspension does not cover European competitions: Brunner will be able to continue playing in the Ligue Europa Conférence during this period. His return to Ligue 1 is expected on October 25, for a clash between European qualifiers against Lille.
