Derek Cornelius was hospitalized Wednesday after suffering an injury during training with the Canadian national team, the Canadian Football Federation announced, plunging Olympique de Marseille into fresh uncertainty at the worst possible time.

The federation specified it was a non-contact injury to the lower body, without providing further details. The wording of the official statement remains concerning: “Derek has been transported to the local hospital, where he is receiving medical care and undergoing further evaluation.” The exact nature of the injury — knee, ankle or muscle problem — has not yet been confirmed.

Canada Soccer indicated that its medical staff was “focused on supporting Derek and his full recovery,” promising updates “at the appropriate time.”

The news comes at a particularly difficult moment for the Marseille club. Bruno Genesio and his players head into the international break on a run of five consecutive Ligue 1 defeats, and the Marseille manager was hoping to use this pause to allow his squad to recover and rebuild. Cornelius’s injury, with the length of his absence still unknown, could further complicate squad management when play resumes.
