Ronaldo walks out of Portugal camp after Jesus breaks 'secret agreement' on substitute role
Cristiano Ronaldo departed Portugal's international camp on a private jet after manager Jorge Jesus left him as an unused substitute against Norway, reportedly breaking a prior agreement to bring him on for the final 30 minutes.
Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s international training camp after manager Jorge Jesus failed to honour an alleged prior agreement to use him as a substitute during their Nations League win over Norway, sparking a public fallout between the country’s most decorated player and its new head coach.
According to Piers Morgan, speaking on the Sports Uncensored podcast, an understanding had been reached between Ronaldo and Jesus — who previously worked with the forward in Saudi Arabia — that Ronaldo would feature in Portugal’s first two Nations League fixtures before resting for the following two. In the opening game, Ronaldo was substituted off after 67 minutes rather than completing the full 90, prompting Jesus to apologise privately to the player and to the Portuguese FA president.
The situation deteriorated further ahead of the Norway fixture. Jesus asked Ronaldo to set aside the agreed rest and contribute 30 minutes from the bench. Ronaldo reportedly agreed, only to spend 25 minutes warming up on the touchline without being called upon. He subsequently held emergency talks with Portuguese FA officials and departed the camp by private jet.
Morgan drew a direct comparison to the breakdown between Ronaldo and former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, accusing Jesus of publicly undermining the forward after initially apologising. “He pulls a Ten Hag where he goes out and tries to belittle and embarrass Ronaldo, put him back in his box,” Morgan said. “For him, it’s a question of respect — being promised one thing then the opposite happened.”
Morgan also pushed back against the suggestion that Portugal perform better without Ronaldo, noting that the 39-year-old scored the decisive goal in last year’s Nations League final.
The incident raises questions about Ronaldo’s international future under Jesus, who took charge of the national side following Roberto Martínez’s departure. Portugal have not commented publicly on the specifics of any agreement between the manager and the player.
