Cristiano Ronaldo has delivered an ultimatum to the Portuguese Football Federation, threatening to refuse any return to the national team while Jorge Jesus remains in charge, ESPN reported on Tuesday. The standoff follows Ronaldo’s walkout from Portugal’s training camp last Wednesday, hours after Jesus indicated the 41-year-old would not start against Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

The immediate trigger was a perceived breach of trust: Jesus had previously told Ronaldo he would play, then kept him on the bench. When it emerged he would again be omitted from the starting line-up for the Denmark fixture, Ronaldo left the camp. He said at the time that he would eventually “tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons” behind his departure, but has made no further public comment since.

Portugal went on to beat Norway 2-1 in the Nations League on Sunday, after which both Jesus and federation president Pedro Proença moved to publicly downplay the episode. Proença described it as a “misunderstanding that needs to be resolved internally” and insisted Ronaldo remains welcome.

“We are talking about the greatest player of all time, a player who has given more than two decades to Portuguese soccer,” Proença told Portuguese television channel RTP. “He will always be part of this squad if he is technically fit to play. Cristiano knows this.”

Jesus, for his part, said he had no intention of apologising and that Ronaldo would be eligible for the next call-up if he wishes to return — provided he is still playing for Al Nassr.

“I don’t know what Cris will decide,” Jesus said after the Norway win. “To me, there was never an issue. There are non-negotiable principles for a coach, but since there were no issues regarding my authority, for me, if Cris wants to return, he will be eligible for the next call-up, as long as he is playing for Al Nassr. It’s up to him.”

Jesus was appointed Portugal head coach in July following the country’s exit at the 2026 World Cup, and acknowledged at the time that clarifying Ronaldo’s international future was a priority. Ronaldo had indicated the 2026 tournament would be his last World Cup, but has not formally announced his retirement from international football. Proença said there will be an opportunity for all parties to sit down and discuss the path forward.

“Ronaldo is a symbol of our country,” Proença said. “He is a Portuguese icon, an absolutely extraordinary player who could have ended his international career after the World Cup but chose not to out of love for the national team.”
