Reece James faces three-month absence after Chelsea captain undergoes knee surgery
Chelsea captain Reece James has had a minor knee operation and is expected to miss around three months, ruling him out well beyond the new year. Manager Xabi Alonso confirmed the setback is "not going to be a two or three-week thing" ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.
Reece James faces a three-month spell on the sidelines after Chelsea confirmed the 26-year-old underwent a minor knee operation on Friday, ruling their captain out of a demanding run of fixtures that includes games against Tottenham, Liverpool, and Manchester United.
James had already missed Chelsea’s last two matches either side of the international break — a period in which he also withdrew from the England squad — but the surgery means his absence will stretch well into the new year. The club said in a statement that James “has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase.”
Manager Xabi Alonso, speaking at a press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Everton, did not hide his frustration. “It’s not going to be a two or three-week thing, it’s going to be longer and after that we will see,” the Spaniard said. “Before Christmas, after Christmas, time will tell. Things have to be done properly so that he feels right and is in the best possible condition. It’s a disappointment for everyone, for him, but we need to have a squad to deal with injuries.”
It is not the first time James has been sidelined with a knee problem. A similar injury in 2022 forced him to miss that year’s World Cup, though his fitness improved significantly last season, allowing him to play a prominent role for England at the 2026 edition.
Alonso has deployed James in midfield this season, making the loss of his captain particularly disruptive. Levi Colwill has stepped in as skipper during James’s absence, and Alonso expressed confidence in the depth of leadership available to him. “We have Moi [Moises Caicedo], we have Levi, we have players who take responsibility and carry that role in a perfect way,” he said. “Each one is different — Levi is different from Reece, Moi is different, Cole [Palmer], Hendo [Jordan Henderson], Dibu [Emiliano Martinez]. That’s why it’s so important for me to have a mix of personalities, qualities and stages of their careers.”
The timing is far from ideal for Chelsea, who face Everton on Saturday before hosting Tottenham and then travelling to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, with a home game against Manchester United to follow.
