Real Madrid's verbal deal for JJ Gabriel sparks calls to reform youth transfer rules
Paul Merson has demanded a change to the rules that allow 16-year-old JJ Gabriel to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid, as the Spanish giants reportedly reach a verbal agreement to sign the Enfield-born teenager.
Real Madrid have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign 16-year-old JJ Gabriel from Manchester United, with the teenager’s imminent departure prompting former Arsenal forward Paul Merson to call for an overhaul of the rules governing youth transfers abroad.
Gabriel, who joined United aged 11 after spells in the academies of Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham, remains a registered United player despite a formal request to cancel his registration being submitted in September. As a European Union passport holder, moving to an overseas club is relatively straightforward under current FIFA regulations, leaving United with limited recourse beyond a training compensation fee expected to be between £100,000 and £300,000. The club is also reportedly considering legal action against any European side that completes the signing.
Merson was unequivocal in his criticism of the existing framework. “This rule’s got to change — that he’s allowed to go abroad, and that needs to change,” he said. “Man United have worked on this kid, made him the player he is. Give these academies a chance where they’re putting in a lot of hard work, just for someone to go: ‘I’m leaving now’.”
The pundit acknowledged the appeal of the move for Gabriel himself. “There’s not a player in the world who wouldn’t go to Real Madrid. You ask any player who’s playing in the Premier League: if Real Madrid comes for you, you rarely turn Real Madrid down. Great opportunity for the kid, but I still think that rule might have to change; otherwise, this is not the first time it’s going to happen.”
Merson also pointed to the case of Rio Ngumoha, who left Chelsea’s academy two years ago under similar circumstances, as evidence that the issue extends beyond United. “It’ll happen all the time,” he added.
Gabriel had featured in London grassroots football with Top Ballerz alongside Mathis Eboue, son of former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue, who currently plays for Chelsea. United are awaiting formal confirmation of the deal as the situation continues to develop.
